2019: will the economy stay on track?

Economic forecasters see a steady year for the economy in 2019, but only if the government manages to secure an orderly exit from the European Union in March, as David Smith reports.
 

Economies are a bit like trains. Most of the time they trundle along quite happily perhaps a little bit late but in an unremarkable way. Sometimes thankfully very rarely they crash and at other times they are affected by the weather or industrial action or other factors.

The train analogy is a useful one when thinking about how Britain’s economy is likely to do this year. All other things being equal last year’s timetable should provide a useful guide to what will happen this year. The economy on this view will trundle along. That indeed is the way the economic forecasters appear to have approached it.
