Avoiding Avoidance

 
Linda Allen Head of Anti-Avoidance Group Intelligence outlines how it is setting HMRC's anti-avoidance strategy
 
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has an obligation to protect the integrity of the tax system and to close the tax gap created by avoidance.
 
The Anti-Avoidance Group (AAG) is HMRC's response to this challenge. The team was established shortly after the department was founded and is setting HMRC's anti-avoidance strategy. AAG has responsibility for policy advice as well as for working with operational colleagues to identify and investigate avoidance activity more effectively.
 
There are four units within AAG: Intelligence Policy Investigations and the UK's representation at the Joint International Tax Shelter Information Centre (JITSIC) based in Washington DC.
