Gross domestic product figures, due on 25 April, have taken on a lot of significance. Though the figures will be preliminary, and subject to extensive revision, first impressions count. The Coalition, having embarked on a tough fiscal strategy, cannot afford to give the impression that it has driven the economy back into recession.
