CIOT highlights priority areas for HMRC

The CIOT has written a letter to the new HMRC Chief Executive and First Permanent Secretary JP Marks to highlight some key areas of priority to help address the Exchequer Secretary’s three priorities for HMRC:

  • closing the tax gap: by HMRC sharing more granular data with certain stakeholders better taxpayer communication with HMRC’s debt management teams more accurate HMRC records with adequate resources and energy given to meaningful tax simplification;
  • modernisation and reform: by setting out the specific projects in its ‘digital first’ strategy which should be ‘co-created’ with key stakeholders including clarity on outstanding policy matters for MTD for Income Tax the level of testing and software choices; and
  • improving customer service: by focusing on tracking correspondence to reduce the need to contact HMRC as frequently which should also be built into every new digital service.
