CJRS: statutory leave returnees

The coronavirus job retention scheme (CJRS) closes to new entrants on 30 June 2020. From that date, employers will only be able to furlough employees they have previously furloughed for a full three-week period. This means that the final date by which an employer could furlough an employee for the first time was 10 June.

On 9 June, however, the Treasury announced that parents on statutory maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental or parental bereavement leave, and who return to work ‘after a long period of absence’, will be permitted to be furloughed, even after the 10 June cut-off date. This will only apply where the employer has previously furloughed employees.
