The EU Parliament’s ‘conference of presidents’, made up of the leaders of political groups, has voted to set up a further committee on financial crimes, tax evasion and tax avoidance, to be known as TAXE 3, which will run for 12 months. This follows and will build upon the work of the former TAXE 1, TAXE 2 and PANA inquiry committees.

The new committee will, among other things, focus on:

  • the use of offshore tax havens to save VAT;
  • tax evasion and tax avoidance related to the digital economy; and
  • the impact of the EU’s ‘blacklist’ of non-cooperative jurisdictions for tax purposes.

The full Parliament is due to vote on the precise mandate for the new committee at its plenary sitting on 1 March.
