In mid-November 2020, the UK government published the Freeports Bidding Prospectus, opening a bidding process to establish at least seven new freeports across England. The devolved administrations will oversee their own processes to create additional Freeports in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The bidding prospectus sets out a model for English freeports. The document covers crucial topics including geographic guidelines, site design and size, rules on planning, regeneration and innovation but the tax offering, outlining six tax incentives and reliefs, lies at its centre. The ideal represented by freeports provides a sketch of its vision for a post-Brexit UK as an outward looking, global, maritime-nation, championing globalisation and free trade.
