Further government funding for customs declarations

printer Mail

The government has announced a further £10m in grants to help customs agents recruit additional staff from 1 October in preparation for Brexit. Two earlier tranches of funding in December 2018 and September 2019 provided grants to help businesses fund training and IT improvements related to completion of customs declarations.

The new recruitment grant will be available to businesses that:

  • currently complete customs declarations on behalf of importers and exporters; and
  • have been established in the UK for at least 12 months.

The grant will be worth £3,000 in respect of recruitment costs for each employee and up to £10,000 towards salaries of employees recruited before 31 January 2020.

Recruitment costs and half the eligible salary costs will be paid upfront, with the remaining half of salary costs paid when the employee has been in post for one month.

The grant scheme is administered by PwC on behalf of HMRC and applications will close on 31 January 2020 at the latest. See bit.ly/2TPsn5b.
