As HMRC’s effort to get to grips with tax evasion through offshore tax accounts has developed over the past five years, it has gained new powers to go with its growing experience of project based approaches to enforcement. Early success won it increased government support for innovative arrangements, such as the Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility, that have become effective cash generators. With its investigation resources being stepped up and the UK–Swiss deal coming on stream next year, it is well placed to turn the whole initiative into a finely tuned money-making machine.
