HMRC updates guidance on plastic packaging tax

HMRC has expanded its guidance on exemptions from plastic packaging tax. In particular, the list of exempt packaging used to import goods into the UK has been updated with examples.

A new section Transport packaging on exported goods has been added covering the following:

• businesses can claim a credit where they have paid the tax on packaging which is later exported;
• certain businesses can defer paying the tax if they intend to export the packaging unfilled in the next 12 months; and
• liability for tax is cancelled when the transport packaging is exported unfilled within 12 months and there are records to show the export has taken place.
