How did you end up in tax?

 Having been a complete failure at school I had to go to night school to gain the academic qualifications to become an accountant. I was fortunate to have Peter Gravestock as a mentor who was a very capable tax lecturer and encouraged me to go down the tax route.

What has been the key challenge you have faced as CIOT president?

I think it was trying to get all the professional bodies to understand that we are not in a very good place at the moment in our HMRC dealings although I must say I think things may be improving.
