How did you end up in tax?

I started off doing financial corporate and insolvency related work most of which raised tax issues – then discovered the whole new world of tax ... and stayed.

Who in tax do you most admire?

I have been fortunate to work with many tax QCs (who acted both for and against my clients) and I truly admire their ability to articulate persuasively very different views on the same issue.

Name a memorable moment of your career to date.

The first case in which I presided as an acting judge in the High Court in South Africa. I could not speak for the first hour. I did not know what to say so I just nodded with sufficient ‘judicial authority’.
