How did you end up in tax?

Early in my career as a solicitor I worked on a number of tax-driven transactions. I found them interesting and decided then to learn more. That led to my joining a small tax team within a large corporate firm and it went from there.

What's the most difficult issue you've come across?

Occasionally you will come across a situation where another adviser has obtained a written clearance from HMRC for something that as a matter of law you believe to be incorrect. Negotiating your way around the ethical relationship and regulatory issues can be a nightmare.

Who in tax do you most admire?

There are a few members of the tax bar who are extremely impressive but to spare the blushes of those still practising I will only name Sir Andrew Park QC. Until his retirement I...
