What are you working on at the moment?
I’m organising a transfer pricing study of an international container line and restructuring an Indian fund with investments in Middle East Europe and USA.
Is there a common problem you come across time and again in tax?
For tax advisers it's not understanding the client's business; it is impossible to carry out a transfer pricing study without understanding the driver behind the profits. And for inspectors it's treating the HMRC manuals as the legislation and quoting them as if they were the tax law.
Who in tax do you most admire?
David Goy QC for explaining tax principles clearly to the most irascible client who was unwilling to take advice.
What advice would you give to someone entering the profession?
Focus on the areas that you are good at and most importantly enjoy.
