How did you end up in tax?
Like many people I suspect – unintentionally. I began my training in the law at a small private client firm in London mostly dealing with the affairs of one particular noble family. The work centred around income tax capital gains tax inheritance tax and trusts. I also spent a lot of time doing accounts and completing tax returns. Tax work was attractive because it represented a constant challenge and I just kept on doing it.
What advice would you give to someone entering the profession?
Always always go back to the legislation and work from there. Even if you think you know the answer take the time to work it through again. Different problems throw up different perspectives and sometimes you end up rereading the legislation in a wholly new light.
