One minute with Simon Burke, group tax director and MD of Middle East & North Africa, Legal & General
Simon Burke combines two roles at Legal & General: Group Tax Director and MD of Middle East & North Africa. In 2012 L&G won both the Taxation Award for Best In-House Tax Team and PwC’s Building Public Trust Award for Best Tax Reporting in the FTSE 100.
How did you end up in tax?
I left university in the early 80s and applied to the Civil Service Selection Board – a fiercely competitive process. They sent me to HMRC. I enjoyed my three years there and thought the training they gave was excellent. Having qualified as a tax inspector I moved to PwC. I made good friends at HMRC and am regularly in touch with some of them.
Who in tax do you most admire?
John Whiting....
