HM Treasury has launched a consultation on the proposal for a new online sales tax covering ‘new’ forms of retail. But the government still sees this as a way of dealing with the old problem of business rates. With 40 detailed questions, the consultation document seeks stakeholder input on fundamental questions around the scope, design and impact of the new tax, and reveals several areas of concern around fairness, deliverability and complexity. Stakeholders have until 20 May to feed in their views. HM Treasury then faces the daunting task of concluding on the best way forward.
