An online petition to ‘scrap plans forcing self-employed and small businesses to do four tax returns years yearly’ has received over 105,000 signatures. The petition was launched following publication of the government’s ‘making tax digital’ plans, published at the time of the Autumn Statement. The government has responded by saying that ‘quarterly updates will largely be a matter of checking data generated from record keeping software or apps and clicking “send”’.

Online petitions which receive more than 100,000 signatures are to be subject to a Parliamentary debate. A date for this has not yet been set.

Writing in Tax Journal, HMRC’s Lin Homer said: ‘Contrary to some reports, the new system won’t require businesses to fill out four tax returns a year’, adding: ‘Continuing this digital transformation will be at the heart of our activity in 2016.’
