The additional tax yield received from compliance investigations into small and medium-sized businesses by HMRC has increased by 31% in the last year, according to figures obtained by UHY Hacker Young. Compliance investigations into SMEs amounted to £565m for HMRC in 2012/13, up from £434m in 2011/12.

Meanwhile, a new HMRC taskforce aims to recover £10m by targeting tax evasion and fraudulent VAT repayment claims in the security industry, concentrating on London and the South East. HMRC has launched 54 taskforces since 2011. A further 16 are planned for 2013/14 and up to 30 for 2014/15.
