The changing national minimum wage landscape

Ian Goodwin (Mazars) discusses recent developments and the compliance issues facing employers.

The national minimum wage and national living wage (referred to collectively as ‘NMW’ throughout) have become central to risk management business cost analysis and pay strategy in the UK over the past five years for businesses of all sizes.

Attention to this area has been heightened by:

  • The introduction of the national living wage in 2016 enhancing the NMW for those aged 25 or over. The Living Wage Foundation grants accreditation to applicant businesses paying a voluntary hourly living wage set by the foundation. This is defined very differently to NMW meaning that you can have instances where an employer is accredited for living wage purposes but is paying below the NMW.
