HMRC is consulting until 30 August 2023 on a proposed new voluntary standard for customs intermediaries, with the aim of improving the quality of service provided across the sector. According to the consultation documentation, 78% of all customs declarations in 2022 were completed by third parties, and 99% of traders relied solely on an intermediary to declare all of their trade. The UK government consequently sees capacity in the customs intermediary market as a key priority for supporting exporting businesses, particularly as many will have started completing customs declarations for the first time following Brexit.
HMRC says it intends to run several webinars on the proposals. Anyone who is interested is invited to get in touch with HMRC via the consultation response email included in the documentation.
