George Osborne’s proposed cuts to tax credits have resulted in embarrassing defeats for the government in the House of Lords and led to objections to the changes extending well beyond the chancellor’s normal political opponents. The question is whether amendments to the changes in his Autumn Statement on 25 November will quell the criticism.
